 Theatre

  • Historic Capitol Theatre & Cultural Arts Center - 159 South Main Street, Chambersburg - 717-263-0202 (20-30 min)
    • Restoration & History - In 1926, the Pottstown (PA) Theatre Company wanted a new "Flagship" theatre to head up its rapidly growing chain of movie palaces. Chambersburg was chosen as the site. Completed in record time of nine months, the state-of-the-art steel and brick building, the Capitol Theatre, opened with a grand spectacular on the night of February 3, 1927. The Capitol was the newest and most technically advance venue anywhere in the area. A magnificent Moller pipe organ was installed and no other theatre in the area even had a pipe organ.

The downtown redevelopment arm of the Greater Chamber of Commerce purchased the theatre in 1996. With donations of time and money from the businesses and citizens of Chambersburg, the Capitol has undergone needed restoration and is now the cultural arts center for the region. The Capitol depends heavily on a staff of active volunteers for its continued success.
